Which birds are they suitable for?
The Defender® Narrow Stainless Steel bird spike is designed for pigeons. It can be used in areas where a pigeon is perching or roosting. However, if it is an overnight nesting or roosting area, a wider spike with more pins may be more appropriate.
Where can I use narrow bird spike?
The Defender® Narrow Steel Bird Prevention Spikes are perfect for the top of fences, small ledges, window sills and walls with depth of up to 7.5 cm (3 inches). They will stop pigeons landing, nesting and roosting as soon as they are installed. If the ledge or roosting site is more than 7.5 cm you may want to consider using and additional row of narrow spikes or a wider spike like the Defender® 8 Wide Steel Bird Spikes which is able to protect a ledge of up to 15 cm (6 inches).
How do bird spikes work?
All Defender® Bird Prevention Spike products have been approved by the RSPB as the most humane way of preventing birds from being able to land without injury or harm. The stainless steel pins stop the birds from being able to land, roost or nest. As the spikes make it uncomfortable for birds, they simply move on safely to a new nesting site.

How to install Defender Narrow Stainless Steel Bird Spikes
Anyone can install Defender® Narrow Steel Bird Prevention Spikes. You do not need to hire specialist contractors if you have basic DIY skills. Defender® Bird Spikes are easy and quick to install on your home or business. The preferred method by most customers is to glue the spikes down using our Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone. This is the quickest way to install the bird prevention spikes but if you prefer you can also use nails, screws, or cable ties.
Step 1 - Clean the Area: Make sure the area is clean, dry, and has no loose dirt or debris. For surfaces that are heavily soiled with bird droppings please see our

Step 2 - Fixing Methods: When installing Defender® Narrow Steel Spikes, we would always recommend using Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone. It is quick and easy to use and will attach the strips with ease to most surfaces. However, the prevention spikes are lightweight enough to fix to pipes, railings, and rafters using cable ties, or they can be screwed or nailed to the surface using the small holes already in the base.
Step 3 - Silicone: Using a caulking gun (not provided) squeeze a bead of silicone about 8 mm wide along the base of the narrow steel spike. If the surface you are installing on is uneven you may need to use slightly more. It is important to check the suitability of surfaces for use with Defender® Silicone. Step 4 - Positioning: Push the narrow steel bird spike down firmly into place. Along the base of the Defender® Stainless Steel Narrow Bird Spike, there are 9 cross-shaped holes. When using fixing silicone, the adhesive will protrude through the holes and form cross-shaped rivets that lock the stainless steel bird prevention spike firmly in place. The plastic base of the narrow steel spike is flexible and can be installed on a curved surface.
Step 5 - Full Protection: Repeat the process until the area is fully protected. Every effort should be made to spike all possible landing sites 2.5 cm or greater. Defender® Narrow Stainless Steel Spikes have 9 snap points along the base. These make it possible to make the strip smaller without extra tools. Making it adjustable means the bird prevention spike will fit perfectly on any size ledge or roosting site.
