The Defender® Thistle® is a superb, all-plastic, low profile bird control spike which will stop small birds such as starlings and sparrows, from perching on all areas of your property. The pins are only 62 mm high which makes it virtually invisible from the ground.
Our newest addition to the Defender® range, the Defender® Thistle® has an impressive 80 pins per strip which fan out in 8 separate angles. The impenetrable pattern of pins not only deters small birds, but also stops larger birds, like the pigeons and seagulls from landing. This makes the Defender® Thistle® the ideal solution for all bird control problems. As with all Defender® Bird Spikes, The Thistle® is made by us here in our Devon warehouse.
Defender® Thistle® - Key Features:
Strip Length
Each strip of Defender® Thistle® is 333 mm (13 inches) long. 3 strips are needed to protect a one metre length of ledge. One metre of Defender® Thistle® will have an incredible 240 pins set in 8 different angles, therefore stopping the most determined small bird from landing on any surface on which the Thistle® has been installed.
Ledge Protection
The Defender® Thistle® stops small birds from landing or perching on ledges up to 10 cm (4 inches) in depth. It is the perfect solution for the beams on a pergola or a narrow fence and as it is only 62 mm high its very inconspicuous.
How to install Bird Spikes for Small Birds
All Defender® Bird Spikes are easy to install with just a basic knowledge of DIY skills. The Defender® Thistle® is no different. The recommended installation method is to silicone the Thistle® on to a surface. Firstly, ensure the surface to be protected is clean, dry and free from flakes and debris. We suggest using our Defender® Fixing Silicone to run a bead along the bottom of the Thistle® and then simply press into the desired position. For more information, please visit the product page Defender® Fixing Silicone Adhesive Glue.
Ensure the Defender® Thistle® is placed as close to the leading edge as possible. Leave no gaps, so if the ledge is wider, use a second row of Thistle® bird spikes.
Other methods of installation include using cable ties for use on banisters, pipes or rails. There are also small holes along the base that can be used for screwing or nailing onto wooden surfaces.
Silicone Fixing Holes
Along the base of the Defender® Thistle® are 38 cross shaped holes. The silicone will push up through these holes when the bird spike base is pressed onto the ledge. This creates a locking system that keeps the Defender® Thistle® firmly in place.
Snappable Sections
Each strip of Thistle® Bird Spike is 333 mm long, however if a smaller strip is needed to finish a run or a small fence post needs proofing, the bird control strip can be snapped by hand to shorter lengths. Along the base of the Defender® Thistle® are 4 grooves where the spike can be snapped in to 5 smaller pieces that are 65 mm long. This is useful when installing on undulating, curved or uneven surfaces.
Humane Defender® Bird Spikes
Although the Defender® Thistle® may look aggressive, it is a humane bird control solution and does not hurt the birds at all. The fan of pins act initially as a visual deterrent to birds wanting to land and most will move on to more accessible areas. If they are more determined the dense pattern of the pins means getting close will be uncomfortable for the bird and indeed make it impossible to get a foot hold onto the ledge.
Long Lasting Bird Control
The Defender® Thistle® is made from a UV stabilised polycarbonate plastic. This means it will not discolour or go brittle in direct sunlight. In fact, it comes with a 15 year warranty for your peace of mind.
If you have any questions about the Thistle® or any of our Defender® range, please contact us and we will get back to you to start to help resolve your bird problem.
Please note:
For every 24 strips (or part there of) that you order, we will automatically add one tube of fixing adhesive to your basket. Only our Defender® Adhesive is recommended as others may not stick to the base.
