Defender® Curved Ridge Spike

This ridge spike has a base specifically designed to sit securely on half-round curved ridge tiles. If you have an angled, triangular ridge tile, the Defender® Angled Ridge Spikes is the best option.

The ridge on a roof is the favourite perching place of pigeons and seagulls. It is the perfect place to check for danger and available food sources. Most flocks will have a preferred roof to base themselves on during the day, particularly if a neighbour feeds the birds at specified times of the day or the nearby takeaway puts the rubbish out. Seagulls and pigeons have learnt to look out for these events and will be ready to swoop.

Many ridge tiles are shaped in a half-round, semi-circular shape and this is what the Defender Curved Ridge Spike is specifically designed for. It has integral anti-topple stabilisers on either side so the spikes stay firmly in place with no movement or slippage while the adhesive cures. They are also available to buy in 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel.

Long Life Expectancy

The base and the stabilisers of the Defender® Curved Ridge Spike Anti-topple System are made from a UV-stabilised polycarbonate which will not become brittle or yellow with age. The pins which are fixed into the base are made from 304 Grade stainless steel which is corrosion resistant and this is why these Defender® Bird Spikes come with a 25-year ‘No-Rust’ Warranty.

Four Rows of Pins

The base of the Defender® Curved Ridge Spike has 4 rows of 304-grade stainless steel pins which are 15 cm long, suitable to humanely deter the long-legged seagull as well as the shorter pigeon. The wide spread of pins is not only a great visual deterrent to birds, but also physically stops them from landing on the half-round roof tiles.

Specially Designed Anti-topple System

The curves in the anti-topple stabilisers ensure that once the spikes have been siliconed into place on the half-round roof tile, there is no movement or slippage. Even the most persistent bird will not be able to shift these spikes off the tiles. The curve of the anti-topple stabilisers gives a close fit to the shape of the tiles and means that during installation, the bird spikes will sit on the ridge without moving out of place. This makes an install at height a much easier job. If the ridge tiles have an triangular shaped top, there is a specially shaped ridge tile spike, Defender® Ridge Spike which can be used instead.

Marine 316 Grade

Defender® also offer the Curved Ridge Spike in 316 Grade Marine Stainless Steel. It is particularly suited to coastal areas as it has anti-corrosion properties against sodium chloride.

Defender® Curved Ridge Spike

Defender® Curved Ridge Spike ‘Anti-Topple’ System - Key Info

Which birds are the ridge spikes suitable for?

  • Seagulls
  • Pigeons

The Defender® Curved Ridge Spike will deter both pigeons and seagulls from sitting on top of the roof as the pins are extra long to account for the long legs of a seagull, whilst also deterring pigeons and other like-sized birds. The bird spike base has specially designed integral curved anti-topple stabilisers which extend from the base on either side to give stability to the strip. If the ridge tiles are angular, you will need the Defender® Ridge Spikes.

Where can I use ridge spikes?

  • Half round curved roof ridge tiles
  • Half-round chimney pot covers
  • Curved concrete coping on the top of parapet walls

It is worth mentioning that once you stop birds such as seagulls and pigeons from landing on the ridge tiles, they will often abandon the roof altogether.

How do curved ridge spikes stop seagulls landing?

Viewed straight on, the Defender® Curved Ridge Spike has 4 rows of pins fanning out, so will easily protect the whole of the curved tile and will deter the most determined bird from attempting to come in from the top or side to land. They are a humane deterrent that will provide both a visual and physical deterrent to birds landing and perching on the roof. The Curved Ridge Spike base and stabilisers can be easily glued into position on the roof tile. Make sure silicone is also applied to the stabilisers either side of the base too to ensure a secure hold on the top of the ridge.

How to install Defender® Curved Ridge Spikes

Defender® Curved Ridge Spike

The nature of this product inevitably means working at height, so if you are not comfortable accessing your roof or working with ladders, please do contact someone who is. The system is easy to install, it is simply siliconed into place, so any property maintenance person or pest controller will be able to help you.

Step 1 - Clean the Area: As the Defender Curved Ridge Anti-topple System is siliconed into position, it is necessary to prepare the area first. If birds have been perching on the tiles, it is very important to thoroughly clean the area to ensure a good fix with the silicone. All bird guano, moss, lichen and any loose debris should be removed.

We would recommend damping down the debris first, preferably using a disinfectant like Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray. This stops the cleaner from breathing in any dry droppings, which could potentially cause respiratory illnesses. After it's been left to soak in, use a stiff brush, a scraper and warm soapy water to remove the dirt. Leave the area to dry fully before beginning installation.

If you would like further advice on cleaning bird droppings safely, please refer to our guide"How to Safely Remove Bird Droppings From Your Property".

Step 2 - Fixing Methods: Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone is the silicone we recommend to use with the Defender Curved Ridge Anti-topple System. It is specifically formulated to create a strong bond with the polycarbonate base of our Defender spikes.

Step 3 - Silicone: A caulking gun is required to use in conjunction with our Defender Silicone tubes; if you don’t already have one, they can be purchased on our accessories page. We also have a handy guide on "How to use a Caulking Gun" if you haven't used one before.

Using the caulking gun, squeeze a bead of silicone about 8 mm wide along the entire length of the base of the Curved Ridge Spike, including along the stabilisers. Always check the suitability of surfaces for use with our Defender® Silicone. For more information, please visit the product page : Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone

Step 4 - Positioning: You can position a couple of strips of the Defender Curved Ridge Spike at the ends of the roof to stop birds from making a mess down the side of the building or on the area below. However, birds will be able to sit on the unprotected parts of the ridge.

If the aim is to banish the birds entirely, you must place the Defender Curved Ridge Spike Anti-topple System along the whole length. Do not leave any gaps between the strips as birds will try to land in these spaces. To finish a length exactly, there are snapping points between the stabilisers which can be snapped by hand. These shorter lengths can then be siliconed into place to finish the job.

Step 5 – Other Sections: As access could be tricky it’s worthwhile considering other areas that may need proofing, for example, the chimney stack and pot or even the aerial. If seagulls or pigeons liked to perch on your ridge, they might just move to the next convenient area. Take a look at the roofing section of the ‘Not Sure What to Buy’ page for examples of other areas on the roof which might need birdproofing.

Quality Curved Ridge Anti-topple System - 25 Year Warranty

The pins used in the Curved Ridge Spike are manufactured from 304 Grade Stainless Steel which has great anti-corrosive properties and this is why we confidently sell it with a 25-year ‘No-Rust’ Warranty. The base and stabilisers are also moulded from UV-stabilised polycarbonate, which is known to not become brittle or yellow when exposed to the elements.

Defender Spikes Made in the UK

All of the Defender range of bird spikes are made in the UK, in a warehouse in Devon. Jones and Son Pest Control Supplies Ltd design, patent and manufacture every element of each Defender® Bird Spike strip. Machinery in the warehouse is used to bend the wires to shape and mould the plastic, and a team of spike assemblers insert the wires, by hand, into every strip of bird spike that leaves the warehouse. This is why we are confident that the quality of our spikes is high.
