Atlas Environmental - Winners July 2025 | Defender Wide Plastic Bird Spikes

Meet the Team

Phil and Jacob are the father-and-son team behind Atlas Environmental Services, a family-run company based in the North West.

We’re from Atlas Environmental Services, which is a family-run business. We’re father and son and the co-owners and directors of the company.

They’ve come together to talk about a recent installation and the award they’ve just won for it, the prestigious Defender Bird Spikes Installer of the Month for July. Phil hands over to Jacob for the details of the job.

The Burger Bay in Nelson Installation

Jacob explains the project: We had one of our clients that's been constructing a new site located in Nelson, Lancashire, and he spent a fortune on new signage. Absolutely lovely place. Initially, they were contacted for pest management. But the day before the scheduled work, something changed. A day prior to that, he noticed the feral pigeon amongst the signage area and was quite concerned.

They responded quickly: Prior to going, a survey visit was carried out. We've come back to our stores, and we have your wonderful bird spikes that we use consistently from Team Defender. We love you. They have beautiful signage. The last thing we wanted is the issues, damage, the obvious diseases and the very unsightly mess that's left you know, pigeon guano slopping down the front of a brand new sign. It's not a very appetising sight for a burger joint.

Installation Technique | Defender Wide Plastic Bird Spikes

Installation Technique

Jacob explains the method: We installed these spikes at an angle, herring bone style. We found its 100% successful as opposed to lining them back-to-back. We found that we can easily install them angled and that gives you sufficient coverage. Its a wonderful installation and looked aesthetically pleasing on the eye. The main thing is that it's a permanent exclusion for pigeons and it has worked 100% successful.

Winning Recognition

Phil shares the news: We've won an award for it. For the second time! We are the first company ever to win it for a second time. So yeah, we're really pleased with that. It's a really cool award. I like that. Thank you. Thank you very much. and Jacob follows up We have a fantastic new trophy.

Why They Always Choose Defender

Phil explains their choice: We always use these. I've been in the business over 20 years and I've done countless installations for bird spike and other types of bird work. Every single time we've always come back to these. Since we started our business, we’re in our 7th year now, we've never used anything other than these. They're the most versatile spike that I've ever, ever seen. You can do what the hell you want with these at any moment. It's like one spike fits all to me, no matter what. I bang the drum for it all day long. They're wonderful. So please don't ever stop manufacturing them because we'd be knackered without them.

The Joy of Bird Control

Phil reflects on their work: We are a pest control company, and bird management is probably one of the best parts of doing the job as far as I'm concerned. We get to go out together and it's normally a sunny day, it has to be a sunny day, so we're not gonna get rained on. We choose the day, get out there, have some great sunshine, and see some of the most amazing sights because we're not on the floor doing pest control. We're up there in the air.”

Jacob adds: We go all over the place and you see some amazing sights. It’s great work — very different kind of work.

Family First

Jacob is proud of their setup: We love being a family-run business, the same as Team Defender. Obviously I couldn't find a better business partner than my dad. We've got a team of other technicians that are part of our family, including my wife Rebecca who does the administration and the accounts. We absolutely thrive and we love being a family-run business. I think it really sets us apart from national companies. Dedication. Providing an exemplary service day in, day out. We've thrived in the pest management industry and the bird control industry and we love every minute.

Looking Ahead

Phil shares their continued recognition: We've been awarded other accolades along the path as well. We've just had a nomination and we've been on a team video this morning with the judges.

Jacob adds: The National Pest Awards 2025. We're down to the last three of those, which we're delighted with. And what we look forward to as well, because we've won this for the second time with yourselves, we're really looking forward to the third time! We're not gonna stop at this point. We shall continue and we'll send the videos in and show you what we're up to.

Doing the Job Right

Phil outlines the process: Every time we get a call, we don't just get a bag full of spikes and away we go. We do a full survey of the place, whether it's by drone or physically going up to the top of the buildings. We do a comprehensive survey, get back to the client, and get them to agree the way forward. We’ve been very successful. We hardly ever get a call back. We're incredibly thorough in what we do.

He compares it to general pest control: All our work is hidden, you know, in pest control itself. You hide your work. But with bird spikes and the like, this is on display. We often go for walks with Jacob's children, my grandchildren, and we're pointing out work that we've done in town centres years ago. It's still there. It's there to be seen. Other people do see it. We make sure our work is there and there to stay. We use the very best silicone and, as far as we're concerned, the very best spikes.

Jacob signs off: Thank you very much, Team Defender, from Atlas Environmental Services. We're over the moon to receive our second award. Thank you very much.”

It just remains for us to thank Phil, Jacob and all at Atlas for choosing Defender Bird Spikes and a huge congratulations on being our first ever second winner of Installer of the Month. If you want to take a look at the install that won them their first prize head over to the dedicated blog.
