This month we are celebrating brothers Carl Hoult TechIOSH and Craig Hoult of Reaper Bird Control Ltd, who have been crowned our Installer of the Month for August 2025. In their video interview, they chat about the jobs they enjoy, the challenges of bird control, and what it is really like to run a pest control business alongside your brother. Protecting a Car Park from Pigeons

Carl and Craig’s winning entries couldn’t have been more different, but both show the same level of care, professionalism and attention to detail. The first project took place in a busy multi-storey car park where pigeons had been causing chaos for years. Anyone who has parked under a nesting site knows the damage guano can do — corroded paintwork on cars, slippery walkways, and serious hygiene issues. Before any spikes went down, the team carried out a full biocide clean to create a safe environment. Only then did they install an impressive 250 metres of Defender® Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spikes, fixing them securely along I-beams and ducting with our very own Defender® Fixing Silicone. The result is a space that is now protected from pigeons and much safer for the public.

Stopping Seagulls with Defender Ridge Spikes

The second project was a rooftop in Southwold where gulls had made themselves at home. After carefully removing an old nest, Craig came up with an innovative solution — fitting a wire frame with Defender® Thistle Spikes over the gully. This clever design kept the birds away but still allowed water to flow through. Every ridge on the roof was fitted with Defender® Ridge Spikes, while the chimney also received Thistles. They even took the time to clean and check over a Dorma roof from a previous installation, making sure the entire property was fully protected. It is a smart, tidy install that really shows off their skill.

What we love about these two projects is how they highlight the flexibility of Defender® bird spikes. From an industrial car park to a coastal rooftop, Carl and Craig adapted their approach to suit the environment, always putting safety and effectiveness first. It is this thoughtful, thorough way of working that really stood out and earned them the Installer of the Month title.

They know each other’s strengths, they trust one another, and they bring that brotherly teamwork to every job.
