Meet Our July Installer of the Month Winner, Ross Chamberlain

A huge congratulations to Ross Chamberlain from Leading Pest Solutions, our Defender Bird Spikes Installer of the Month winner for July.

Based around Hornchurch and covering Essex and London, Ross and his close knit team provide pest control and proofing services for residential and commercial customers. His winning installation caught our attention as a thorough example of protecting a property from the top down.

We caught up with Ross to find out more about the winning job, how he found his way into pest control and what he aims to offer customers through Leading Pest Solutions.

The winning installation

Tell us about the job that won Installer of the Month. What problem was the homeowner experiencing?

The winning project was a residential bird control installation for a homeowner who had been struggling with pigeons roosting on their roof.

The pigeons were causing constant noise and leaving droppings around the property. The homeowner was also concerned about the mess and potential damage they could cause over time.

The challenge was to provide a long lasting solution while keeping the installation neat and discreet so that it blended in with the property.

How did you approach the installation?

Ross began at the highest point of the roof, fitting Defender Wide Plastic Bird Spikes to the television aerial before working down to the flaunching around the chimney pot and then onto the curved ridge tiles.

The ridge was unusually wide and required two rows of spikes. These were positioned with the pins overlapping to prevent pigeons from finding a space between them.

This top down approach meant that each likely landing place was protected, reducing the chance of the pigeons simply moving from one part of the roof to another.

Defender Wide Plastic Bird Spikes were a good choice for this installation. Their clear plastic construction makes them discreet when viewed from ground level, while their lightweight design makes them particularly useful on aerials. They are also a cost effective solution and come with a 15 year material warranty when installed in the UK.

What difference did the installation make?

Once the Defender Bird Spikes were installed, the pigeons were no longer able to roost on the roof. The property was cleaner, quieter and protected from future problems.

Seeing the finished result and the customer’s reaction made it a particularly rewarding job, and the homeowner was extremely pleased with the outcome.

Getting to know Ross and Leading Pest Solutions

How did you find your way into pest control, and what led you to start Leading Pest Solutions?

I found my way into pest control through a friend who introduced me to the industry. Once I started, I quickly realised how much I enjoyed the variety of the work and the satisfaction of solving problems for customers.

It was not long before I knew it was the career I wanted to pursue, and that eventually led me to start Leading Pest Solutions.

I wanted to build a business that customers could genuinely rely on, providing an honest and professional service with clear communication, high standards of workmanship and long term solutions rather than quick fixes. I take pride in treating every customer’s property as if it were my own.

What kinds of pest control work do you undertake, and which jobs do you enjoy most?

We deal with all types of pest problems, including rats, mice, wasps, bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches, squirrels and bird control.

I have been working in bird control for several years, installing bird spikes and other proofing solutions on residential and commercial properties. During that time, I have dealt with a wide range of bird related issues, so I understand the importance of choosing the right solution for each property.

Bird proofing, and proofing work in general, is my favourite because it is rewarding to solve the root cause of a problem and stop it from happening again.

Where does Leading Pest Solutions operate, and who is part of the team?

We are based in Essex and cover the whole of Essex as well as London. We work with residential and commercial customers, providing everything from individual treatments to ongoing pest management contracts.

We are a small, close knit crew that is passionate about what we do. Being a smaller team means we can offer a more personal service, respond quickly to our customers and make sure every job is completed to the highest standard.

As we continue to grow, our focus remains on quality, reliability and customer satisfaction.

What part of pest control do you think would surprise people?

I think people would be surprised by how much detective work is involved. It is not simply about treating the pest. You need to discover why it is there, how it is getting in and what measures can be put in place to prevent the problem from returning.

Every job has its own challenges. Some of the trickiest situations involve working at height or finding entry points that are not immediately obvious. It takes patience, experience and careful planning to achieve the best result.

What is the most satisfying part of your work?

The most satisfying part is seeing the customer’s reaction when the problem has been solved.

Knowing you have taken the stress away and provided a long term solution makes all the hard work worthwhile.

What do you look for in a bird control product, and why do you choose Defender Bird Spikes?

A good bird control solution should be humane, effective and built to last. It also needs to suit the property, be installed properly and look as discreet as possible while preventing birds from returning.
