Which birds are the gull spikes suitable for?
The Defender® Seagull Control Spikes are designed with longer pins to enable them to stop seagulls. Therefore, if seagulls are causing your issue, this is the deterrent spike for you. Where can I use seagull spikes?
Defender® Seagull Spikes will get rid of seagulls from a ledge up to 20 cm (8 inches). If the ledge is wider, you can add a second row of spikes, leaving as small a gap as possible between the tops of the pins. If the seagulls are trying to nest in or on your chimney, it is important to stop them before they begin to nest. The nesting debris the seagulls use to build a nest can cause fires if the chimney is operational. In this instance we would recommend Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes.
How do seagull spikes work?
The individual pins are 15 cm (6 inches) long and stop seagulls from being able to land wherever they are installed correctly, preventing gulls from nesting or roosting. The Defender® Seagull Spikes are a completely humane solution for any seagull problem. Each seagull deterrent spike has 20 pins made from 304 Grade Stainless Steel. This is one of the best methods for humane seagull control, recommended by PiCAS.

For every 24 strips (or part thereof) that you order, we will automatically add one tube of Defender® Fixing Adhesive to your basket. Only our adhesive is recommended as others may not stick to the base. This can be removed at the checkout if not required.
How to install Defender® Seagull Spikes
The Defender® Seagull Deterrent Spike can be installed by anyone who has a small amount of DIY knowledge and safe access to the area that needs protection.
Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting any installation of seagulls spikes, it is essential that the area is clean, dry and free from droppings and debris. It is important to look up; it may be that the source of the mess is actually from ledges or pipes higher up on the building. If this is the case you will need to spike these as well. If this is not done, then droppings, twigs etc. may fall onto the seagull spikes below rendering them less effective.
Dampen down the area with a disinfectant spray like
Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray and remove any loose droppings or debris. If a seagull has already been using the area it may be heavily soiled with seagull droppings. If this is the case please see our

Step 2 - Fixing Methods: The best way to install seagull spikes is to use the specifically designed Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone. This adhesive is formulated to create an extra strong bond with the polycarbonate base of our seagull spikes. However, the gull spike strips can also be nailed or screwed into position through the premade fixing holes along the base. They can also be cable tied in position.
Step 3 - Silicone: You will need a caulking gun (not provided) to use the silicone we sell. Use the caulking gun to squeeze a bead of silicone about 8 mm wide along the base of the seagull spike. If you find the surface to be uneven or rough, you may need to use slightly more. Always check the suitability of surfaces for use with Defender® Silicone. Step 4 - Positioning: Stick the first row of seagull deterrent spikes towards the front of the leading edge. Press down firmly so the glue oozes out through the little holes. If the gap behind the pins is greater than 10cm (4 inches) seagulls may get in behind. It is therefore necessary to install another row of spikes into this space to block it. For very wide ledges 3 or more rows of spikes may be required, remembering to leave as small a gap as possible between the tops of the pins of adjacent rows.
Spike the highest part of the ledge first then move on to spike the lower sections afterwards. If this is not done then seagulls will overcome any spikes on lower parts by standing on the raised section. Repeat the process until the area is fully protected. Every effort should be made to spike all possible landing sites 2.5 cm or greater. Along the base of the Defender® Gull Spikes are 9 breakable sections that can simply be snapped apart with your fingers. This makes it easy to fit the spike to any length of ledge without leaving any areas unprotected.
Step 6 – Cavities and Raised Sections: Seagulls are very strong and can be very possessive of their chosen nesting or roosting sites. If there is a cavity, hole or raised section above the ledge being protected, every effort should be made to protect this too. If there is a hole behind the area, make sure this is blocked and no birds are trapped behind.
